Research shows that our nervous system contains cannabinoid receptors involved in many physiologic processes related to mood, memory, and pain. CB1 receptors are found in in the brain, nerve cells throughout the body, lung, liver, and kidneys. CB2 receptors are found associated with the immune system. These receptors bind with endocannabinoids (produced in the body) or with phytocannabinoids (found in cannabis plants). Both marijuana and hemp come from the plant species Cannabis sativa. CBD oil is derived from industrial hemp and is legal in all 50 states because it contains less than 0.3% THC. Any cannabis plant containing more that 0.3% THC is considered marijuana.
Vocabulary:
Endocannabinoid System: Endo stands for endogenous, which means produced within the body. Cannabinoids refer to the group of compounds that bind to cannabinoid receptors and work with the nervous and immune system. This biological system plays an important role regulating many basic functions within the body. The overall function is to regulate homeostasis, the tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even when faced with external changes.
Endocannabinoids: are synthesized in our bodies from Omega 3 fats and produced when the body signals that they are needed.
Cannabanoids or Phytocannabinoids: are derived from plants in the Cannabinacae family, they do not cause people to feel high, instead they have been found to reduce inflammation, anxiety, and pain. There are 85 different cannabinoids that have been found but two stand out; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
Anandamide: Discovered in 1992, this endocannabinoid was named after the Sanskrit word, Ananda meaning bliss. Higher concentrations are found in the body versus the brain.
Cannabidiol (CBD): A cannabinoid found in Cannabis (hemp and marijuana). It is non-pyschoactive, unlike its counterpart THC.
